2nd October 2012 - Statutes Fair ...

The fashion students of Burton & South Derbyshire College were holding an in prompt to fashion show, modelling their own t-shirt designs, which was held in and around the annual statutes fair. I had the opportunity to be apart of the fashion show and to document the event. This type of event is very similar to a flash mob. A flash mob is a gathering of people who assemble suddenly, perform an unusual and seemingly pointless act for a brief time and then disperse.

For me, this event was very useful as it gave me the experience of being in a different situation and on how to deal with it appropriately. At the time of the flash mob, i was very shy at the beginning as i was photographing complete strangers. But as time went on it was natural of me to just snap away, as i became familiar with the people around me and also because the models were moving around so quickly, i was focused on other aspects as everything went so quickly. This is similar to the work of Willi Dorner, "Bodies in Urban Spaces".

"Bodies in Urban Spaces" is a moving trial, choreographed for a group of dancers. This invites the residents to walk their own town thus establishing a stronger relationship to their neighborhood  district and town. There are a chain of physical interventions set up very quickly and only existing temporally without leaving any traces behind but imprints the eye witnesses memory.

This demonstrates that even though it was a quick in prompt to event, if the documentary images didn't come out as well as planned, then they could always be re-staged, but may not have the same effect as the first images.

Now, being involved in this type of event, I would definitely volunteer myself for this type of documentary photography as it is something that i have really enjoyed, and would maybe like to pursue on. I believe, That i really have improved on my people and photography skills, as while i was doing this shoot, i was running around doing what i needed to do and also talking to people i had never met before.

Being part of this event, is essential to me as a practitioner as i have never done this type of photography before and it is something i would like to pursue on as i am not yet too confident with this photography but would love to build my confidence and experience levels as much as i can.
